The University of Maryland (UMD) Department of Transportation Services (DOTS) has secured a grant of USD40 million from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to procure electric buses.
The funding will be used to purchase and operate 35 electric buses and to install charging stations and other support infrastructure. The service is estimated to commence in 2026.
UMD aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025 and a complete transition to an electric fleet by 2035.
