Saudi Arabia’s transport sector is experiencing a major transformation. The Kingdom is developing an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing industry and preparing for widespread EV adoption. Flying taxis are being tested at different locations across the country, while bicycle and scooter sharing schemes are being introduced. Riyadh’s metro is set to open in 2024, and construction on a new 920 km railway connecting Riyadh and Jeddah is expected to begin in 2025. In the same year, Saudi Arabia’s new national airline, Riyadh Air, is set to launch. What ties all of these initiatives together is a commitment to sustainability – economic, social and environmental. Sustainable development is now percolating throughout Saudi Arabia. This is being driven by the Kingdom’s far-reaching national transformation plan, Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy, reduce reliance on oil, enhance people’s quality of life, and safeguard the natural environment.
