India’s commitment to transitioning towards a sustainable future is demonstrated by its ambitious ‘Panchamrit’ goals, announced at the COP26 summit in Glasgow in 2021. Among these targets, India aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, with significant milestones set for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity, increasing non-fossil energy capacity, and meeting a substantial portion of its energy needs from renewable sources by 2030. The transportation sector, a significant contributor to India’s CO2 emissions—accounting for 12% of the country’s CO2 emissions—plays a crucial role in achieving India’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets. Recognizing the need to decarbonize this sector, India has embarked on an accelerated path to adopt electric vehicles (EVs). The transition to EVs is a necessary step for achieving the Panchamrit targets and also a critical component of India’s strategy to ensure a sustainable and resilient future.
