Colorado’s 2035 Transportation Vision aims to nearly double the share of trips taken by walking, public transportation, or biking by 2035. This initiative addresses issues such as the high costs of driving, pollution, safety hazards, and time consumption associated with car-dependent travel. Currently, non-driving modes account for just 9.6 per cent of all trips in Colorado. To reach the state’s goal, this figure would need to increase to over 19 per cent within the next decade. Achieving this target would align Colorado with cities like Flagstaff and the Seattle metro area in terms of non-vehicle travel. The state plans to set official mode-share targets, implement land-use policies to promote urban infill development and increase investment in non-driving infrastructure and services to realize this vision. A 2021 analysis found that reducing daily driving by 10 per cent could save Coloradans $25.3 billion by 2035, primarily through reduced spending on vehicle operations like fuel, insurance, repairs, and parking.
