In cities, rapid transit corridors are usually seen as ways to move people around, but this paper argues they are even more important for shaping how cities grow, boosting the economy, and ensuring everyone has fair access. It examines key ideas that shape corridor planning. Using Bengaluru as an example, the paper shows how planning these corridors fits into the city’s recent growth, and reviews how projects since 2015-16, like metro rail, suburban rail, the Bengaluru Business Corridor, the Bengaluru-Mysuru express corridor, and the Bengaluru-Mumbai Economic Corridor, have helped the city and surrounding areas grow together. The paper explains how each corridor type is planned and the pressures it faces as cities grow.
