Two years after the Pheu Thai Party reclaimed leadership of Thailand’s national government, one of the party’s major remaining proposals is a cap on mass transit pricing in Bangkok. Analysts and politicians across the Thai political spectrum have debated transit issues for many years. In 2019, TDRI researchers warned that Bangkok’s newest transit lines would be too expensive for low-income workers, with average fares of 30 baht being nearly triple what the poorest Bangkok residents could comfortably afford.1 Pheu Thai’s latest contribution to the debate had been to try to cap train transit fares at 20 baht for Thai citizens. A cap on Purple Line fares at 20 baht started in October 2023, and the government had planned to cap fares for all of Bangkok’s train lines starting in October or November of 2025.
