The Ministry of Finance and Economic Development of Ethiopia (MOFED) has announced plans to begin construction on the bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Addis Ababa by end-2017. It will be the first BRT system in East Africa. The line will span 16 km from Wingate to Jemo and have service frequency of three minutes.
In April 2015, the Government of Ethiopia had secured a USD50 million loan from Agencé France de Development (AFD) for the project. France-based Société Anonyme Française d' Etude de Gestion et d' Entreprises (SAFEGE) SA and two Ethiopian companies secured the contract to design and construct the line. The city further plans to develop seven BRT lines by 2030.
