South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) has finalised plans to construct a high speed suburban rail network, the Great Train eXpress (GTX). The network will comprise three lines: GTX A (Ilsan-Dongtan), GTX B (Songdo-Cheongnyangni), and GTX C (Uijeongbu-Geumjeong).
GTX A will span 76.9 km from Ilsan to Dongtan, covering nine stations. It will be built in two sections and is expected to cost KRW3.58 trillion. The average daily ridership is estimated to be 300,000 passengers by 2025. The operating speed will be 116 km/hr.
Section 1 of GTX A will span 37.4 km from Ilsan to Samseong and will be developed by private investors. Requests for proposal (RfP) will be issued for construction in 2017 and the contract will be awarded in 2018. Construction is expected to commence by end-2018 and be completed by 2023.
Section 2 of GTX A will span 39.5 km from Samseong to Dongtan and will be developed by Korea Rail Network Authority. The line will share tracks with the Super Rapid Train (SRT) high speed line. Daelim-led joint venture secured a KRW191.2-billion construction contract in 2015 and expects to complete the works by 2021.
