Italferr, the engineering firm under Italian State Railways (FS), has awarded a EUR397-million contract to an Italy-based joint venture (JV) of Salini Impregilo and Astaldi to design and construct the first 15.5-km section of the Naples-Bari high-speed rail (HSR) line, which will connect Naples to Cancello, covering three stations. Salini Impregilo holds a 60 per cent stake in the JV while Astaldi holds 40 per cent.
The 146.6-km HSR line is expected to require an investment of EUR6.2 billion. Once complete in 2022, the line will reduce the Naples-Bari journey time from 3 hours 45 minutes to 2 hours. The HSR is part of the Scandinavia-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Network (TEN).
