Europe: Rail network density and utilisation rates [free access]

According to the latest European Commission data, European countries have deployed, on an average, around 437 km of rail network per million people and over 500 km of rail network per 10,000 square km.  In terms of network utilisation (thousand train-km per line-km), the average for Europe stands at 18.5 per cent. In the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Denmark, Austria, Belgium and Germany, the network utilisation rates are about 60 per cent higher than the European Union average.
